Shanti Yoga Teacher Training: Meet the Instructors

Director, Debbi Murphy, PhD, ERYT 500
A child of the sixties, I've been intrigued by the Mind-Body connection for decades. Thoreau, Freud, Maslow, Kenneth Cooper, Bonnie Bainbridge were my heroes as I studied psychology, philosophy, exercise physiology through the 70's. This culminated in a B.S. in literature/poetry, masters in Psychology and Phd in exercise science. Believing there was still a piece missing, I also pursued the study of yoga with master teachers Richard Freeman, Rodney Yee, Shiva Rea and Seane Corn but felt I had truly "come home" when I took teacher training from Erich Schiffmann. Compelled to create a space dedicated to "finding peace within", I created Shanti Yoga Studio & School in McCall, Idaho in 2001. We began with weekly classes, monthly workshops & advanced study/teacher training workshops and then developed our Shanti Yoga Teacher Training program which emphasizes the transformative power of yoga. Through personal experience and from teaching for the past 20 years, I believe this power not only changes the person, but allows the practitioner to impact the evolving, dynamic art & science of yoga. I love to teach yoga and have expanded my schedule to include venues throughout the world. I also continue to attend advanced teacher trainings and workshops with master teachers, but feel my greatest influences are my students. My slow flow yoga style is inspired by my early study in biomechanics & exercise physiology….my attention to the emotional & cognitive aspects of yoga is influenced by my study of Emerson, Whitman, Jung, Jack Kornfield & neuroscience. My humor is inspired by tapping into the true nature of yoga….bliss. You can go to my website below for more info, or my Facebook page, debbi murphy or debbimurphy.com.

She is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, at the 500 hour level.

Kimberly Lee, M.S., RYT 500

Shortly after relocating to Boise in 1998, she began to practice Iyengar yoga; becoming very interested in the precision of alignment and form for which Iyengar is known. She studied, apprenticed, and later taught for Vickie Aldridge at the Boise Yoga Center during which time she had the opportunity to study with several other prominent Iyengar Instructors. Mindy began teaching prenatal yoga in 2001 and has taught ongoing classes ever since. In 2003, she studied with renowned prenatal yoga instructor Collette Crawford at the Seattle Holistic Center. Julia Jones
I spent 30 years exercising the traditional "western" way... cycling, running, bootcamp, aerobics... and found that I was continually recovering from one sort of injury or another, especially as I got older. So, I started to look for a more sustainable total body workout that I could practice for many years to come.

After one class with my instructor and mentor, Deb Murphy, owner of the Shanti Yoga Studio in McCall, I knew I was hooked. I immediately felt the amazing effects of yoga and as a result, I continued to attend classes. Thus, began my journey toward becoming a yoga instructor myself.

This has, hands down, been the most rewarding self-discovery of my life. Through my practice, I have become strong, balanced, healthy and happy, and I have learned to experience each day for the present it is.

Mother of five, grandmother of nine; Yoga enthusiast, I believe in balance and peace both on and off the mat. I love to watch my students transform and fall in love with yoga. My classes focus finding balance, strength and flexibility and developing positive thought tools that serve the student in their daily life. I received my 500 RYT at the Shanti School of Yoga in McCall, ID. I have my AFAA certification in group fitness and I am CPR certified. I'm looking forward to seeing you on your mat!
